MY STORY
WHO AM I?
THE RESULT

Did you know that there is a connection between loving one’s self and loving others? It’s true. After all, when we don’t actually care for or respect ourselves, how can we possibly do it properly for those we are supposed to love? It’s like expecting a starving person to feed someone else! How’s your self-image? Here’s how I came across this life-altering realization.

Audrey Valeriani is an author, freelance writer, relationship coach, creator and host of www.TheAccidentalExpert.com and www.Bootcampforthebrokenhearted.com.  She is also a Columnist for the Malden Observer (MA) and former board chair of the Boston-based, non-profit organization Self Esteem Boston Educational Institute, Inc.  See www.selfesteemboston.com.

She has written many articles, including Are Our Young Women In Trouble?, Full ‘Steem Ahead! and Who's Your Role Model? which are dedicated to empowering women and promoting harmony and love.  She has also recently been named as a contributor and expert for www.womensweb.ca and also writes for www.chicgalleria.com.

Her book entitled Boot Camp For The Broken-Hearted: How to Survive (and Be Happy) in the Jungle of Love was published by New Horizon Press 2007.  In her humorous, girlfriend-to-girlfriend style, she discusses how self-image directly influences relationships and life choices, by sharing personal experiences, statistics, one-on-one interviews with women and men, sample dialogue, familiar scenarios, as well as field-tested advice and inspiration.

She previously published two gift books, SIMPLE WAYS TO A WOMAN’S HEART: Movie Star Maneuvers That Will Take Her Breath Away! (1999) and It’s Not Easy Being Me! Random Thoughts of the Modern Woman (2003), which are available on Amazon.com and other bookseller sites. one day in my life...

“I walked into the therapist’s office, broken and ready to let it all out – after all, what did I have left to lose? Just after my nineteenth birthday, my mother died from cancer, my engagement broke up, I was forced to put my dog to sleep, my father unexpectedly sold the house which had been in my family since my grandmother came over from Italy, and I had no place to go. If that wasn’t enough, soon after that, I suffered through some abusive relationships, additional family tragedies, and then, my best friend died. I had had enough. All of these things had driven me, finally, to the point of hopelessness, desperation, and rage. So here I sat, believing that this therapy session was my last chance of surviving under all this rubble. My heart was broken, my strength was gone; I felt unloved, betrayed, and inertly suicidal. Still I struggled to listen and understand everything my therapist said and tried to follow her every instruction. After all, my life was on the line. After several sessions, we began to make some progress. During one session, she suggested we try a visualization-meditation technique that I will never forget. She told me to sit back, relax, and picture a little girl who lives in my shirt pocket..."

The incredible epiphany in the therapist's office made me hungry to live, not just survive, and to feel genuinely and deliriously happy. I read everything I could get my hands on about love, family, God, the meaning of life – you name it. But the beginning of my healing was when I became acquainted with that little girl. That beautiful meditation saved my life. I wondered how many other women out there needed saving."

 INTRODUCING THE SELF-ESTEEM DOLL!

(as seen in the news and on the internet)

*********************************************

New doll aimed at reinforcing girls' self-worth

by Gina Chen, July 08, 2008

A fellow mom passed along this tip. There's a new doll out that aims to help "celebrate high self-esteem," according to a news release for the doll, which is appropriated dubbed "Self Esteem Doll."

It's the brainchild of Audrey Valeriani, board chair of the Self Esteem Institute and author of "Boot Camp for the Brokenhearted."

The dolls come in a variety of skin, hair and eye colors, so that every girl, regardless of ethnicity, can have a doll that looks a little like her. They retail for $15.99.

Girls can customize the dolls with sashes of affirming sayings such as:

1. You rock [insert name]!

2. Here's to you [insert name]!

3. Take Care of Yourself [insert name]!

4. [insert name]

5. High Self Esteem Rocks!

I don't generally endorse products on this blog, and I'm not necessarily endorsing this one. But I'm very interested in the idea of young girls -- and boys -- accepting themselves how they are and not trying to fit the movie star ideal of beauty. I do like the idea that the dolls reflect a variety of races because as a mom of biracial children, I have found it tough -- if not impossible -- to find Asian dolls in Central New York stores.

It's particularly tough on young girls today to accept their bodies when the ideal of beauty they are presented with is impossible for so many of them to achieve. I'm all for being healthy and fit, but even with exercise and a healthy diet, most girls won't come close to looking like the models they see in the media or fitting in the itty-bitty clothes they see in the most popular stores.

Plus there's that awkward stage during puberty when a little girl's body is turning into a woman's, and the result is often hardly the svelte, size 0 girls that age may wish they had. So anything that helps girls accept themselves is good in my book.

Remember how important you are!

Help friends and relatives remember how important they are!
